It is my love of animals, whether equine or otherwise, together with a passion and fascination for three-dimensional form in all its diversities, that makes up the foundation stones for all my work as a sculptor.

I can recall the very moment when, as a 10-year-old boy playing with clay, I became aware of an energy in the hind leg of an animal I was making.

On leaving school, I nurtured the dream of being a sculptor and pursued a career as a National Hunt jockey. My day to day involvement with horses whether on the gallops, at exercise or on the racecourse was, for me, the perfect apprenticeship for what lay ahead.

My last ride as a professional jockey came nearly 10 years after riding my first winner in 1977, and since then I have been a full time sculptor.

Living in the country my work is not limited only to horses. I also draw upon subjects close at hand. If at all possible, I work from life. I note the expressions and the mannerisms of my subject, its form, gravity and personality. These observations and feelings, thorough my hands, impose themselves on my work. Although immensely challenging, this process is quite natural. Once complete, the sculpture is cast in bronze using the "cire-perdue" or "lost was" method of casting.

My bronzes are split into 3 groups:

Commissions - one off studies for private clients. All of which are immensely important to me. I am loath to start listing them however, studies for well known racing characters have included "Pursuit of Love" for Lord Howard de Walden, "Viking Flagship" for Graham Roach and "See More Business" for Paul Barber. Each commission requires an open mind in approach. Once a depth of knowledge and understanding of the subject is achieved, the creative work begins. I work closely with each client keeping them informed (and also involved if they so wish) of my progress. Then once finished, the study goes to the historic and world famous Morris Singer Foundry (www.morrissinger.co.uk) to be cast.

Limited Editions - creative studies of horses and other animals cast in exclusive editions of nine or less. Each bronze is numbered accordingly. Much of this work is sold at various exhibitions. To date, I have held three "one man" shows in 1965, 1997 and 2000 all at Jonathan Cooper's Park Walk Gallery in Chelsea, London (www.jonathancooper.co.uk). Bronzes can be viewed in person either through Jonathan Cooper or myself.

Trophies - these are few and far between. However, I am currently proud and grateful for my involvement with Vodafone, sponsors of the greatest race in the world - The Vodafone Epsom Derby. I have created trophies for them for the past 6 years - and all have been very different. They have tended to celebrate historical milestones in the blue riband event. Most recently the great Sir Gordon Richards and Pinza winning the Queens Coronation Derby of 1953 were the subjects of the Derby Trophy 2003. It was Gordon's only Derby winner and came in his last year as a licensed jockey having been champion a record 26 times.

"It is not my ambition to be great,
but to create great things of lasting beauty and importance".
