My Racing Trophies and the Derby Dream
In early 1998, Vodafone commissioned me to create a trophy for the Epsom Derby. This was the start of a twelve-year association with the world’s greatest and most famous horserace.
Unlike my small racing bronzes re-cast for the winning jockey and trainer, the owner’s trophy was a separate commission allowing me to produce something different each year.
Diverse and extensive research into the Derby has enabled me to acquire a deep understanding of the great classic, the horses that have won it and its victorious owners, trainers and jockeys. I have transformed the knowledge I have gained into sculptures each of which, in turn, play their part in the historical, rich and romantic tapestry of the ultimate and purest test of a racing thoroughbred; named on the toss of a coin
“William Newton’s Vodafone Derby trophies have all been very different, beautifully executed and greatly admired.”
