Cheltenham Gold Cup Winner

Cheltenham Gold Cup Winner

What can one say about a horse like Denman.  Having won the Royal & Sun Alliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2007, he went on to win the Gold Cup the following year and has been second in that race for the past three years.  He has also won two Hennessey Gold Cups and a host of other races.

In 2004, Paul Barber commissioned me to make a study of his first Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, See More Business, so I was particularly pleased when he asked me to make this bronze of Denman.

As usual, I worked as much as possible from life and one day, I became aware that I was surrounded by possibly the greatest National Hunt horses ever assembled in a field together.  In front of me, was my subject Denman, to my right was Big Bucks and to my left, Master Minded whilst behind me stood Kauto Star and What a Friend, between them, winners of thirty four Grade One races!

“Wonderful, a magnificent bronze – you have managed to capture Denman perfectly for me.”
