2005 – Lammtarra

2005 - Lammtarra Trophy by William Newton

After he had won his only start as a two-year-old, Lammtarra’s trainer, Alex Scott, backed him at 33-1 for the Derby.  The following month Scott was murdered and Lammtarra was transferred to the Godolphin team.

Over the winter, an abscess on his lung almost cost the colt his life.  His chances of running in the Derby, let alone winning it, looked bleak.  He went to Epsom without a prep race but showed an electric turn of foot to win the Classic easily.  Further successes that year in the King George at Ascot and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France, concluded an undefeated career.
