1999 – Racing to Glory

Racing to Glory 1999 Epsom Derby Trophy

Speed and stamina – just two of a Derby winner’s qualities – are put to the test.  Two horses make their move on the leader.  Mounted on a flat cigar-shaped base, the three horses challenge each other on a slant. When viewed from the side, they appear to race at the same angle as the horses at Epsom race when viewed from the Royal Box.  I also used this opportunity to focus in on differing jockey styles: note the middle rider’s ‘toe in iron’, once unusual, but today adopted by virtually all jockeys.
